Breakout Session Talks

Tips and Tricks for Career Planning (Drs. Teresa Evans and Nathan Vanderford)

The job market for PhDs has evolved over the last several generations such that relatively few PhDs now become faculty members despite the academic career path remaining the focus of advanced science education/training. Meanwhile, PhD trainees need to better understand how their expertise and skills translate to a variety of career paths. This session will highlight today’s biomedical science job market and it will outline strategies for how PhD trainees can best prepare for today’s diverse job market. Objectives: Participants will learn that PhDs in the biomedical sciences are employed in a variety of diverse job markets and that there are specific actions that should be taken for PhD trainees to best prepare for their chosen career path.

How to Write Your Failure CV (Dr. Rebecca Auer)

The path to success is rarely smooth or straight but rather it is marked with stutter starts, backtracks and epic fails. When we look towards the senior investigators that serve as our mentors, these failures are invisible, leaving one with the impression that most things work out for successful individuals. In this session, join Dr. Auer as she shares what she has learned on her journey as a clinician scientist. We will discuss the value of accepting, sharing and being proud of your failures, as important milestones on the path toward success, and will argue that grit, rather than talent, will define the ultimate trajectory of this path.

Follow Your Passion: A Step By Step Guide to Finding Success and Happiness as a Scientist (Dr. Ismael Samudio)

During the 30 minutes Ismael will share with the trainees, the experiences and opportunities that led him to find the right jobs, the critical soft and hard skills that helped me perform to the best of my abilities, and how he made some very hard decisions that ultimately worked out. The breakout session will be completely interactive and very lighthearted.

Networking Through Community Engagement (Dr. Tina Gruosso)

It can be daunting to think of the plethora of job opportunities that await you after you graduate…where to start? Throughout this session, we will explore how to identify and leverage your network, as well as distinguish yourself from other candidates, through community engagement and volunteering.

Meet the Experts

Monday, October 21, 1 – 2:30pm

The Meet the Experts event will host ~12 subject matter experts representing various careers and job sectors relevant to HQP. It will be a semi-moderated "speed dating" event whereby HQP will have the opportunity to chat with a few subject matter experts in small groups.
